Teeth Whitening - Should you go for it?
Getting a set of whiter teeth or whiter tooth would do wonders to one’s personal life but if you are under the age of 16, then you should not consider it as whiten your teeth at this stage would do more harm than good. Whitening of teeth could cause irritation to your enlarged pulp or tooth nerve at this stage.
If you have receding gums or possess teeth with worn enamel, then you should think twice before selecting a tooth-whitening system. Perhaps a visit to the dental clinic would aid you in your quest to get a set of whiter teeth. As the whitening agent needs enamel to work on, the dentist will treat any cavity that you have before going for the tooth-whitening procedure.
Furthermore, if you know that you are allergic to peroxide, then most of the mainstay teeth whitening systems would not be suitable for you as they use peroxide as a bleaching agent to give you a whiter tooth. Bear in mind that whitening agent do not have any whitening effect at tooth-colored fillings and resins used in crowns, veneers, bridges or bonding.
Smokers must refrain from their smoking habits particularly during and a week after the teeth whitening process if they want the whitening of teeth procedure to show greater result. The same goes for heavy coffee, tea or red wines drinkers.
People with yellowish teeth will have the best result from the teeth whitening procedures that use bleaching agent while those with brownish colored teeth will find lesser whitening effect. Grayish-hue or purple-stained teeth might not show any improvement at all but blue gray staining caused by tetracyline still can show a reasonable lightening effect provided a few in-office treatments are made or months of at-home whitening procedures are diligently conducted.
However, all are not lost for those who have darkly stained teeth. It is best to opt for dental restorations such as crowns, veneers or bonding for achieving the desired lightening effect rather than teeth whitening systems using bleaching agent.
For those who still want to go ahead with teeth whitening with using bleach, the next step is to choose an in-office or at-home teeth whitening system.
